Create Tar Files

Tar (acronym for "tarball") is a file compression format created in the early days of the Unix operating system.

Ususally, uncompressed tar archives only feature the ".tar" extension. When the files are also compressed, a suffix is added to that extension, indicating the algorithm used when performing the file compression.

A tar archive file is composed of one or more files that are usually compressed without any data being lost.

To be able to create this type of archives, users have to use a compatible archiver that supports the tar format.
