MacVim is a project designed to bring the Vim programmer’s editor to the Mac. Vim on the other hand, is based on the powerful Vi app, which is a text editor developed for the Unix operating systems.

Among other additions, the MacVim app provides support for using hotkeys, includes a full screen mode, allows you to work with transparent backgrounds, and much more. Keep in mind that, even through MacVim can process text, it is not intended to be a WYSIWYG processor.

The MacVim main window is represented by minimalist text windows where you get to input your data. However, to successfully use the editor, you must discover everything it has to offer: in the main window, type the “:h macvim” command to access the MacVim Help document.

Here, you can learn more about the tools included in the menus, the supported keyboard shortcuts and trackpad gestures, how you get to define new colors and much more. Via the MacVim Syntax menu you can choose to perform color and highlight tests.

The goal of the MacVim project is to convert the Vim program into an application suitable for the Mac platform. As a result, MacVim includes support for drag and drop actions, allows you to work in fullscreen mode, improves the way in which search queries are handled and much more.

To see all the modifications and improvements brought by the MacVim port, make sure you read the MacVim Differences chapter in the MacVim Help document.

MacVim is a great tool to have around if you are looking for a plain text editor that includes support for highlighting syntax and integrates into the Mac OS X look and feel.

Finding your way around can prove challenging, but it's definitely worth your while because the MacVim app includes a plethora of efficient tools designed to make the task of text editing a breeze.

What's new in MacVim 9.1.0 (179):

  • Features:
  • System monospace font (SF Mono):
  • MacVim's guifont option now supports a new -monospace- value, which instructs it to use the system monospace font, which is SF Mono in recent macOS versions. As mentioned below (New Vim features), you can now use tab-completion to see the available values in cmdline. See :h macvim-guifont for more details on how to use it (including using different font weights). #1463
