Text editors are important tools that aid us in plenty of situations. Whether we work with them all day long, or simply dabble with on occasion to complete a resume or paper work, these digital wonders are life savers in terms of productivity and ease of use, compared to the conventional pen and paper.

Even so, developers are looking to outshine each other with new tweaks to make their own word processing applications a tad easier and intuitive than others out there. This is where Emerald Editor makes its entrance.

This is a Java-based application tool that requires the latest runtime environment. After unpacking the archive, just launch the executable .jar file to work with the app. No installation is required, so you are carefree of registry entries stacking up in your system.

It has a very simplistic interface, retaining the customary settings of most text editors, as well as stylish and pleasant menu color palettes that can be explored in the "User Interface" submenu of the "View"menu. They make for very attractive themes, setting the tone and mood for work.

It offers enhanced flexibility over the conventional text editing utilities, in the sense that you can write on multiple tabs opened at once, an excellent and in many cases invaluable feature that boosts productivity and multitasking where it's applicable.

Emerald Editor includes a real-time word counter, so that you can keep track of your progress and manage the remaining time and workload efficiently.

During our tests we encountered a couple of script errors, discrepancies and freezes. Upon checking for updates and receiving positive feedback, commencing the download resulted in an error, informing us that the update could not be found on the developer's site.

Moreover, it can get a little confusing and counter-productive at times, almost up to the point of it being a buggy mess. If you stick to the basic functionality of text editing with a little overextending here and there, it's manageable. Some of the blame can be put on the compatibility issues with newer OSes.

Emerald Editor is a really good application on paper, it feels right and somehow manages to attract with its simplicity and appearance. Despite being pretty buggy, from weird errors to freezes, one can benefit from its good design if willing to overcome its shortcomings.

What's new in Emerald Editor 3.1:

  • now in alphabetical order
  • saves where the frame last was for restart ( frame.x, frame.y) there are no longer dashes ( '-' ) in the variable names
  • it goes by the class it works for, then the variable 'name'
  • Language menu
