Pro Video Formats For Mac

Pro Video Formats is a software package released by Apple designed to extend the capabilities of your Final Cut Pro X, Motion, and Compressor applications by installing new codecs.

Once the Pro Video Formats update is installed, you will also be able to import, process, and export Material eXchange Format (MXF) files within those three applications.

The Pro Video Formats archive comes with an installer package that, besides the MXF support, also integrates the following video codecs: Apple Intermediate Codec, Apple ProRes, AVC-Intra, DVCPRO HD, HDV, XDCAM EX / HD / HD422, MPEG IMX, and Uncompressed 4:2:2.

Since the installer makes most of the work, all you have to do is follow the on screen instructions, and provide the password for the computer’s admin account when prompted. This software update can also be installed via the Mac App Store: navigate to the Updates panel and select the appropriate option.

The MXF file format can be used for both video and audio content, but the important fact is that it can retain the metadata information about the inside media content. The Pro Video Formats update makes sure this data can be read in the Final Cut application, and that it will be preserved during editing.

The Apple Compressor app will offer you the possibility to convert videos to the MXF format. Note that, within Final Cut Pro you also have the option to export MXF files that have custom metadata content.

Installing the Pro Video Formats update is recommended to any Mac user that is using the Final Cut Pro, Motion, or Compressor applications: the installer will integrate new video codecs, and adds support for the MXF format (you will be able to import, edit, and export MXF files).
