Starting with the Final Cut Pro X 10.1 version, the source media files used by your projects and events have been automatically organized into libraries. As a result, you get to separate the media used by different projects, while you can also group related projects easier.
Final Cut Library Manager is a straightforward OS X utility designed to help you manage and clean these media libraries. The app can scan multiple disks or specific folders in order to detect all your libraries, but also helps you create your own library templates.
Upon launch, Final Cut Library Manager will display all the Spotlight indexed library files stored on your drive. You get to manually add new drives or folders to the scanner, even those that are not indexed by Spotlight. What’s more, you get to rescan the locations to find new libraries, or if Spotlight will not provide satisfactory results.
Final Cut Library Manager will preserve the media files grouped into libraries, allows you to view their location, and provides extensive information in each case: if the media files are external or internal, the file size and duration, the image size, and so on.
Within the Final Cut Library Manager main window you get to change the order of your libraries by applying various filters: size, last modified, or potential space savings. You can choose to toggle the visibility of library items, cache files, external media folders, external media items, and so on.
To regain storage space you can decide to delete optimized media files, optical flow data, proxies or render files. Final Cut Library Manager will make sure that the source files are still available, and Final Cut Pro X will automatically generate these files when you need them.
Of course, Final Cut Library Manager also includes a powerful search tool that can help you find specific items a lot easier: you can search for project/event/library names, but it can also filter notes or comments associated to the media files. To help you get started, the developers provide an online video tutorial that covers most of the apps capabilities.
If you are dealing with a large number of Final Cut Pro X libraries, the Final Cut Library Manager offers you the possibility to keep track of and manage all of them without making you deal with complex tools.
