jModelTest is a free and open source, easy to use tool to carry out statistical selection of best-fit models of nucleotide substitution.
jModelTest implements five different model selection strategies: hierarchical and dynamical likelihood ratio tests (hLRT and dLRT), Akaike and Bayesian information criteria (AIC and BIC), and a decision theory method (DT).
jModelTest also provides estimates of model selection uncertainty, parameter importances and model-averaged parameter estimates, including model-averaged phylogenies.
Detailed instructions on how to install and use the jModelTest utility on your Mac are available HERE.
jModelTest is a cross-platform utility capable of running on any operating system that comes with Java support (e.g. Mac OS X, Windows, Linux).
