Working with archives has become a daily activity for most Mac users. We constantly use various archiving applications to compress and unarchive files and documents that can be used on both Mac and Windows running computers. If you need to share large files with friends using PCs you might want to create a clean archive specially for them.

This is where WinArchiver steps in to help you create Windows compatible ZIP archives that do not contain any Mac OS X hidden system such as .DS_Store, .TemporaryItems, .Trashes and other similar folders and files.

WinArchiver can be bought, downloaded and installed for $24.99 via the Mac App Store. However, you can try the demo version and decide if it is the archiving utility that you are looking for. Unfortunately, the demo version comes with a limited set of features and it can only archive files. By dropping a ZIP file onto its interface, you can only archive it even further. It is worth mentioning that the demo version of WinArchiver also displays advertising banners during its runtime.

Leaving the demo limitations aside, WinArchiver seems to be a very light and oversimplified application that comes with a minimalistic interface onto which you can drag and drop the files and folders you need to archive. The compression process is pretty quick, requiring less than a minute to compress almost 90 MB of text files, documents and PDF files.

The “Creating Zip File” slide sheet helps you encrypt your archive and type a password of your choice, as log as it is a four-digit number, and configure the compression process by accessing the Settings drop-down panel. From the Compression panel you can choose one of the available compression methods and select the language of the archive.

In conclude, WinArchiver is an overpriced and superficial application that promises to help you create ZIP archives compatible with the Microsoft Windows operating system.
