A Mac OS X application that offers you the necessary tools to measure the performance of your network by performing UDP or TCP tests.
To get started, you must install the WiFiPerf application on at least two devices that are connected to your network and specify which one is the server and which represents the client side. By default, the server address is the localhost, so if you perform tests without making the necessary configuration, the info will not reflect the network activity.
On the Mac you want to use as the server side, navigate to the WiFiPerf Server panel and press the “Run Server” button. At the same time, copy the IP address and the port and input them into the Client window of the second computer / iOS device.
In the Client tab you can specify the test duration, the stats interval, the transfer direction, the test type (UPD or TCP), the diagram size, the send bandwidth size, the graph maximum speed and then press the “Run Test” button. Moreover, you can enable the voice alerts and the app will read the results aloud.
In the WiFiPerf results area you can view all the tests that have been performed, the graph for the currently selected entry and the table of results (interval, transfer speed, bandwidth, SSID, BSSID, RSSI, Noise, TX Rate, Signal/Noise, PHY Mode or Security). Moreover, above the results area you can visualize the configuration used for each test.
To sum up, if you are looking for a tools to test the performance of your network, regardless if you are using wired or wireless connections, WiFiPerf might be a very useful addition to your software collection.
