XCommander For Mac

XCommander is a basic two-pane file manager for Mac OS X designed as a replacement for the notorious Finder. Although it does not even come close to the Finder in terms of functionality, XCommander can come in handy due to its dual pane layout.

The user interface is standard looking and can be resized. The panes themselves can also be resized. On the upper toolbar, the application provides shortcuts to several commonly used actions and places, such as copy, move, rename, search and the Desktop, Home, Applications and Documents folders.

XCommander also comes with quick hotkeys as well as icons for frequently used commands including copy, move, new folder, delete and rename. Thus, the app offers a handy alternative to moving files on Mac, instead of CMD + dragging or CMD + C / CMD + ALT + V.

The application also makes it easy to navigate your Mac’s file system by providing a horizontal folder tree above the panes. Copying by dragging and dropping files from one pane to another is also supported. Another great function is searching within the current folder in all the hard drive.

The list of features continues with XCommander’s ability to automatically save the current configuration, including window size. Also, items in a folder are only displayed as a list with the following details: name, size, date and type. Some more criteria would have been welcome.

Nevertheless, you can reorder and resize columns and sort items based on a different criteria by clicking on its corresponding name. Finally, the application displays contextual menus to each item, but the number of options is quite limited.

In conclusion, XCommander is an affordable alternative to the more powerful Finder replacements on the market. Although it provides only basic functionality, the interface is well organized and the dual pane view might be worth giving it a try.
