Almost all modern OSs out there come with useful built-in widgets that enable users to view certain system hardware parameters like the CPU and memory usage, the processor’s core temperature, the amount of available space on storage devices, etc.
The obvious problem with most of these widgets is the fact that they may require considerable memory and CPU resources in order to function, and thus, they slow down your computer’s overall performance.
Today Scripts is a small and straightforward application that proposes an interesting alternative over the classic OS X Dashboard widgets by enabling you view the output of UNIX scripts directly in the Today View from the OS X’s Notification Center.
As in the case of many OS X applications, Today Scripts can be installed on your Mac with a simple drag and drop into the OS X Applications folder.
Once Today Scripts is installed, you can start editing and adding scripts by following a simple list of steps: first you must open the app, then in the OS X Notification Center you will see a “1 New” entry appear.
Once you click the new entry from the Edit button in the Today View, you can start adding and editing scripts by clicking the + button symbol in the widget's title, and, in order to refresh any of the added scripts, you must click its label. Another noteworthy feature is the fact that Today Scripts offers support for colorized terminal output for scripts, including bold and underline texts.
Moreover, the developer provides a collection of useful example scripts that can be used as a starting point for creating your own future scripts. Keep in mind that, if you want to build your own scripts, you can use any command line interpreter supported by Apple’s Terminal application.
Taking all things into consideration, Today Scripts is a very handy application designed to display useful system information within a click’s distance and without having to enable OS X’s Dashboard application.
