Unless you’re a clean freak, you probably have lots of windows and files on your desktop at any given time, and that doesn’t make for great screenshots if you have to capture something quickly.

Screenshot Helper is a very simple app that can help clean up your desktop at a moment’s notice. It covers either just your desktop icons or all windows as well, allowing you to bring up one single app window that needs to show up in your screenshots.

When launched, the app will cover the desktop with either a background color or wallpaper. This can be configured from the settings, and you can customize the color or select your preferred desktop image.

It can cover the entire screen, windows included, or just desktop icons. You can also toggle the menu bar, dock, and mouse cursor, giving you additional options for cleaning up your screen.

While you can use the app’s menu to access various options, it’s far easier to just use the hotkeys. These allow you to toggle between hiding the whole screen or just the icons, hide or show the menu bar and dock, and hide the mouse cursor if necessary.

The hotkeys are not customizable, and they are not global. They only work if the app is in the foreground, which you can do easily by clicking on the desktop.

The app only appears in the Dock, with a rather outdated icon, and it doesn’t offer menu bar integration. This would have allowed you to keep it open and just toggle its various functions when needed, but to save space in your Dock, you’re probably going to want to launch it only when you want to grab a screenshot.
