Rowmote Helper 3.9.3
For such times, Apple has invented the Apple Remote, a simple to use and very handy device that makes it very easy to control your Mac when you're doing something else and your mouse is not within your arm's reach.
Low-key and always at hand remote app controller
Although the Apple Remote is the go to device when it comes to remote controlling a Mac, there are other means of achieving this.
You can do the exact thing using an iOS device and an utility like Rowmote Helper, an app that runs in the background and makes sure that you can manage the OS X apps running on your Mac using Rowmote or Rowmote Pro for iOS and your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
Use any iOS device as a remote for your Mac
Rowmote has been designed from scratch to be a perfect replacement for your Apple Remote that can be used whenever you've misplaced the remote, you don't want to go in the next room to look for it or if you're just more comfortable using your iOS device instead of carrying around another gadget.
A very important advantage Rowmote has over the Apple Remote is the fact that you don't need a direct line-of-sight to your Mac because Rowmote doesn't use an IR connection to control your computer. Rowmote works over your wireless network, therefore, as long as your iPhone is connected to the same device as your Mac is, you'll be in charge of what's happening on the desktop.
Once installed on your Mac, Rowmote Helper will automatically add itself to the login items list to always be available when you fire up Rowmote for iOS in order to control your apps remotely.
Support for controlling a vast assortment of OS X apps
Furthermore, Rowmote comes with built-in support for controlling a huge range of applications, iTunes, Spotify, VLC, DVD Player, Keynote, Quicktime, Safari, Aperture and Firefox being some of them (for a full list of all supported applications you can go HERE.)
Besides being able to put you in control of a plethora of OS X applications, Rowmote is also capable of sending your Mac to sleep and wake it up whenever you need to use it again. Combine that with setting your Mac to ask for a password when it comes out of sleep, and you've got yourself a simple and very effective way to quickly lock your computer when going away.
Control your apps using an iOS device connected to the same wireless network as your Mac
Everything considered, Rowmote Helper in tandem with its iOS counterparts, Rowmote and Rowmote Pro for iOS, will make it very easy to control what happens on your Mac's desktop over a wireless connection.

- Along with support for a few great new applications, including Rdio and Ecoute, the new version sports a redesign of the Applications menu.
- Display, computer-wide, and application-specific commands are split out into easy-access popup menus from simple buttons.
- The applications list now shows only installed applications on the connected Mac (rather than showing every application that Rowmote knows about, even if each is not installed, as was done previously).
- Icons are pulled from the Mac, too, so that the list can be quickly scanned by image rather than just name.
