RootsMagic is a genealogy app that offers you the tools to create a detailed family history that includes all members, without making you deal with complex tools: just add marital or descendence information for each person, and the app automatically organizes the data.

Within the RootsMagic main window, you start from a single person and expand its genealogy tree by adding information about parents, spouse, and children. The same action has to be repeated in each case until all available information is exhausted.

By default, RootsMagic enables you to see all this information in tree view, but you can easily switch to the family or descendants tabs to view the same information in list mode.

At the same time, you get to see a list with all the people included in the tree, you can organize the members using a timeline, and you can search information about each person online.

The RootsMagic Person editor offers you the possibility to include general details, such as the birth date, nicknames, addresses, or personal notes. Among other things, the entry can also include media content and other data that can help you in your research.

Finding you way around the app is fairly intuitive even if the RootsMagic app preserves the layout used for the Windows version of the app.

In fact, the RootsMagic app seems to be ported on OS X by using Crossover, which can be slightly confusing when looking at the file or folder path to locally saved projects.

RootsMagic has everything it needs to be a reliable companion while researching and organizing information about your extended family. Naturally, given the vast number of features that are packed together, the developers also provide online guides and webinars to show you what you can do with the app.
