The RMS Sharing application for Windows developed by Microsoft allows users to protect and share documents with others in a secure manner. To gain access to the service, you must register for a RMS-enabled account on https://portal.aadrm.com/ , free of charge.

Keep in mind that the RMS service does not work with Microsoft accounts, such as the ones that use the Live, Hotmail, or Outlook.com domains. As a result, you must make sure to use an unrelated email address.

Worth mentioning is that, the RMS Sharing application for OS X, cannot be used to protect files. The utility only enables you to view the files that have been protected by Windows users.

RMS Sharing is able to open only certain types of files: ppdf, .ptxt, .pxml, .pjpg, .pjpeg, .ppng, .ptiff, .pgif, .pbmp, and .pfile files. Note that Windows users can use the RMS Sharing app to protect a larger number of file formats.

To use the RMS Sharing on OS X, just drag and drop the protected files on top of the RMS Sharing icon, or use the Open option from the app’s File menu. The first time you will also have to input the credentials for your RMS-enabled account.

RMS Sharing will open the respective file in its main window, and in the top area of the window you will be able to see your current permissions status.
