To avoid having data written on your disk, which usually takes a serious chunk of your resources when dealing with large projects, you can choose to write the data to virtual disks created within the Random Access Memory.

RAMDisk Manager is a simple Mac app designed to help you create these virtual RAM disks in order to improve your computer’s performance while editing large files. By using this technology, you will also stop SSDs from writing data unnecessarily.

User friendly status bar menu app featuring RAM disk management capabilities

The RAMDisk Manager application resides in your status bar which means that is both unobtrusive and easily accessible. The menu list will display all your RAM disks, and you may choose to make them visible or hide them (both actions require a Finder relaunch).

To get stated, open the RAMDisk Manager main window and create as many virtual volumes as you need. To streamline the process, you can choose to make a new RAM disk from the user local “Cache” folder, from the system’s “Temporary” directory, or from the Xcode “DerivedData” build folder.

Create personalized RAM disks to match your usage needs

When you setup a new virtual disk, you must add a name, define a size limit, and choose a priority level. In addition, you can select a mount point, add a post command, choose the visibility mode, link a folder, and define the alert zones.

This way, the temporary data generated when working on a project will be written in the RAM memory, which means that you will effectively prolong your disk’s life time. However, keep in mind that in case of power loss or unexpected computer shutdown, the data will be lost (the RAM memory autosave runs only at certain intervals or when ejected).

Extend your disk’s usage time by sending the temporary files to virtual RAM disks

RAMDisk Manager is a great tool to have around if you are working on large projects and you do not want to waste resources for writing the data to the disk or to SSD. The app enables you to manage as many RAM disks as you need while featuring a streamlined and intuitive workflow.
