The Microsoft Band device connects to the Microsoft Health application and offers you the possibility to analyze the collected data: the heart rate, the sleep quality, or the calorie burn.
Microsoft Band Sync is a minimalist OS X application that automatically synchronizes all this data to your Microsoft account. You get to connect the Microsoft Band device to your Mac via USB, which means that the data transfer is a lot faster.
Right off the bat, you must make sure that you have logged into the Microsoft account used with the Health app within the Microsoft Band Sync utility. You might have to provide a security code that is automatically sent to your email account.
The next step is to define a profile by filling details about your name, the Band device name, your weight and height, gender, and birth date. Microsoft Band Sync allows you to change the temperature measurement unit, but you cannot switch to the metric system.
In the app’s main window, you can view if the Band device is connected and the current battery power level. As long as the Band is connected to your Mac, it will also charge its battery.
At this point, you can choose to sync the health data collected by the device to the cloud, or you can check for software updates. If Microsoft Band Sync detects available updates, it will help you download and install them on your device.
Bottom line, you can connect the Band device to your phone and sync the data to the cloud via the Microsoft Health app, but Microsoft Band Sync provides faster data transfer capabilities. At the same time, you can also use it to update the Band’s firmware.
