There are many options to lock your Mac’s screen by using built in system tools. For example, you can activate a hot corner to launch your screensaver or to put your Mac to sleep and then enable your user account’s password immediately after the computer goes to sleep or launches the screensaver.

All you have to do next time you leave your desk is to launch the screensaver or put your computer to sleep using the respective hot corner and your Mac will be protected by your account’s password.

However, if you use your corners for other tasks or if you do not want to waste energy using a screensaver, Lock Me Now is a small status bar menu app that provides another solution for the same problem.

By default, Lock Me Now will place an icon in your status bar, but you can easily disable that via the Preferences window. If you choose to use a keyboard shortcut instead, Lock Me Now will remain working only in the background without making its presence noticed.

The same area allows you to select the lock type: Just Lock or Login Window. In the first case, Lock Me Now will place a black filter on your screen and will ask for the user password to unlock.

In the Login Window mode, Lock Me Now will show all available user accounts and allows you to choose the one you want to use to login.

As an added bonus, on the Security Preferences tab, you can customize Lock Me Now's Just Lock settings, to have the app automatically take a photo of anyone entering the wrong password to unlock your Mac, as well as to send an e-mail letting you know when it happens.

For your convenience you can have Lock Me Now automatically launched at login, you can allow the app to pause the song playing in iTunes or to use the current screensaver preferences.

More importantly, Lock Me Now can also auto-lock your Mac when the Bluetooth device you've chosen is out of range and to lock your computer once you disconnect your iOS device from the USB port, if you have it connected while you work on your Mac.

On the whole, the Lock Me Now application can be successfully used to lock your Mac’s screen if you do not want to use the built-in system tools.
