Homebrew is a package management app that offers you an easier and faster way to install utilities such as libraries, frameworks and apps that haven't been yet ported to OS X from source.

Moreover, due to the very important role it could play when you have to build various dependencies from a source archive, Homebrew can be viewed as one of the most important tools for Mac users that want to stay true to the UNIX philosophy.

Homebrew-cask is a command-line based utility that extends Homebrew’s capabilities and makes it even easier for you to install GUI based applications on your Mac, using only the Terminal app.

First things first, in order to enable Homebrew-cask to do its magic, you must ensure that the latest version of Homebrew is installed on your Mac. This can be easily achieved by typing the ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install) command in the Terminal.app.

Once this is done, you can quickly install Homebrew-cask from the comand-line by running the following simple command: brew install caskroom/cask/brew-cask .

From now on forward, you can fully take advantage of Homebrew-cask’s features and install over 2200 apps from its all-encompassing cask repository with a simple bash command.

If you are new to these kinds of command-line based tools, we strongly recommend that you first take a look at Homebrew-cask’s list of basic commands, easy accessible by typing brew cask help.

For the most part while working with Homebrew-cask, probably only three commands will most-likely be of interest to you, namely “search” (searches all known casks), “install” and “uninstall”.

Using Homebrew-cask is easier than almost all things done with your Mac, and, in order to install an app you must type “brew cask install foobar”, where “foobar” is the placeholder for the name of the app you want to install.

Uninstalling an app using Homebrew-cask is done in the same easy fashion, by typing brew cask uninstall X in the Terminal.

Homebrew-cask is a dependable and useful utility for OS X because it enables you to effortlessly and rapidly install and update apps using the Terminal app, without having to go online, browse the apps' websites and manually download and install them.
