An open source and free binary package manager that will enable users to install ports of popular UNIX-based programs on Mac OS X. #Package installer #Package manager #Install package #Installer #Package #Packer
Fink is an attempt to bring the full world of Unix Open Source software to Darwin and Mac OS X. Packages are downloaded and built automatically and installed into a tree managed by dpkg, all with full dependency tracking.
You can choose whether you want to download precompiled binary packages or build everything from source.
The Fink project is a group of volunteers that works to port linux programs to run on OSX.
The program Fink is a command-line interface and the backend that fetches and installs the programs you choose. The Fink Commander application is a Cocoa frontend to Fink that will make choosing and installing programs a pleasure.
NOTE: Users who have already installed Fink on Leopard from source, who now wish to switch to the binary distribution, may do so as follows. First, run fink selfupdate to update to the latest version of the fink package manager. Next, run fink configure, and be sure to change your choice about using the binary distribution from No to yes. Final, run fink scanpackages to activate the binary distribution.
