FHDFormatter is a free and easy to use OS X application with a very simple mission: to help its users effortlessly format their Freecom hard drives using the HFS+ and FAT32 formats.
After you connect your Freecom hard drive to your Mac, FHDFormatter allows you to select the type of file system you want it to have upon formatting and, once you click the “Format” button, it starts formatting away.
Upon completing the task, the hard drives you’ve formatted using the FHDFormatter utility can be used either with a Mac system if you’ve used the HFS+ file system, or with a computer running Window or Mac OS X for FAT32 formatted drives (with an added limitation of maximum file sizes of up to 4 GB).
FHDFormatter does replicate Apple’s Disk Utility functionality on OS X, a tool more that will allow you to format hard drives using the same file system formats Freecom’s utility provides.
Although it does what it was designed to do flawlessly, in order to be an alternative to the Disk Utility app when formatting Freecom hard drives on the OS X platform, FHDFormatter could use an extra NTFS formatting option.
This would make it the default too for users that want to store files with sizes greater than 4GB on the HDDs they’ve formatted on a Mac system, prior to using them with a Windows-based computer.
To sum it all up, FHDFormatter is a simple enough tool to be used by beginners when they need to format Freecom branded hard drives on a Mac OS X machine.
