DesktopMonitor is a no-frills and inconspicuous utility you can use for such a task. Apart from continuously tracking your Mac’s resources, DesktopMonitor will also make sure that you always know what’s your CPU’s temperature and how much free RAM you have by displaying them on your desktop.

The system resources information printed by DesktopMonitor on the desktop background is text based and it manages to keep you well informed on your Mac’s status.

Moreover, DesktopMonitor can be effortlessly setup to display a visual alert using the Growl app when your CPU’s temperature exceeds you can adjust from the app’s Preferences window.

What’s more, you may also configure DesktopMonitor to automatically free your Mac’s memory when the inactive RAM surpasses a custom value you can set in the Preferences. If you’re not a fan of automating resource intensive tasks like memory freeing, you can also manually free your Mac’ RAM memory by clicking the “Manual Free” button, neatly placed next to the “Automatically free memory” option.

The font and size of the text displayed on your desktop can also be tweaked rapidly, and you are also offered the choice to add a shadow or wrap the text to fit within the limits set for DesktopMonitor’s display window.

If you have configured DesktopMonitor and you want to further fine-tune the CPU temperature alert value or to manually free some RAM memory, you can double click its icon in your /Applications folder in order to launch the settings window.
