CUPS is an open source printing system for OS X and other UNIX-based operating systems.
Furthremore, CUPS utilizes the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) and offers Berkeley and System V command line interfaces, a web interface along with a C API in order to control printers and print tasks.
Moreover, CUPS provides printing support for local (parallel, serial and USB) and networked printers. The printers can be shared locally or over the internet.
In order to offer a description of the printer features and device specific information, CUPS makes use of PostScript Printer Description (PPD) files.
CUPS comes with sample drivers that support various EPSON, Intellitech, HP, Dymo, Zebra and OKIDATA printers.
