At some point in one's career or curiosity turning point, the need for in-depth and extensive data processing, interpretation and value modification will present itself. Dabbling with raw binary data and hexadecimal (base 16 number system) data alterations becomes a must, if you want to facilitate your low-level data processing, and tweak to your heart's content.
CI Hex Viewer is aimed towards this niche, to deliver much needed flexibility and smart, intuitive tools to ease the processes.
Unpacking the .dmg file was a seamless job in our tests, and the app opened directly afterwards, without adding new registry entries to the system, as it doesn't appear in the app cluster tab. The 16-base numbering system is represented by rows and columns ranging from 0 through 9 to A through F.
CI Hex Viewer tackles a multitude of devices, like hard drives (including complex RAID systems), USB sticks, disk images and virtual machines. The same applies to file formats, as you can basically dissect and tweak everything in your path.
Experience tends to be carefree due to the smart tools and functionality, like complex search and comparison, extended editing with block, or bulk data handling. As for the utilized manipulation techniques, you can truncate, split, append and save the range of the file's hex code.
Unfortunately, it can be a buggy mess on newer OSes. Every action we took that involved more than 2 or 3 clicks brought us to a state of software hangs, regardless of the performed process or navigated area. Clicks didn't work on interactive prompts, and the only workaround was to press the “Escape” key every time it misbehaved.
The drop-down menus did not extend to allow reach over its functions or variables, and the arrows had to be used instead to navigate through them one at a time. A drag-and-drop function would had been practical as well, for ease of use.
CI Hex Viewer is smart and flexible, a pretty capable tool that can find its way into everyone's preferences, provided you are running the proper OS. Because of the substantial time frame due from the last update, compatibility issues can arise, rendering it useless and ultimately a dealbreaker for those looking for a reliable hex editor.
