macOS has a Night Shift feature that makes the screen easier on the eyes late at night, but as with many of Apple’s creations, it is simple and lacks advanced customization.

Black Light provides you with a more intricate version of this feature, along with many other possibilities. You can add all kinds of color effects to your screen, set them up to be activated automatically or via hotkeys, exclude certain apps, and much more.

While you can do pretty much anything with this app, a common use case is to dim the screen and alter color temperature in order to minimize blue light exposure late at night. You can do that easily with Black Light, and the default effect already has a suitable color selected.

Compared to Apple’s Night Shift, there’s a lot more you can customize. You can select the preferred color, tint and dimming amount, under or overexpose the image, and modify gamma.

In addition to just dimming the screen at night, you can change its brightness and color in pretty much any other way, using the sliders at your disposal. There are lots of potential use cases, depending on how you want your screen to look in various situations.

Activation can be automatic, based on the current time, or manual, by selecting an effect or using hotkeys. The app can also appear in the menu bar, making it easy to switch between effects.

Customizable hotkeys can be used to tweak the current effect directly without switching to another one. They are not active by default, but you can configure them in the app’s settings.

The app won’t switch between one effect and the other instantly. You can determine how long the transition will be so that you don’t get an abrupt shift.

If you don’t want an effect to be active when a certain app is in the foreground, you can add it as an exception. This will apply to all the effects you’ve created.

Overall, Black Light is intuitive and versatile, whether you want a more advanced Night Shift or you have some other plans for it. There’s a lot of customization on offer, and you should be able to tweak it until it’s perfect for what you need.
