BibDesk Review by
4.0/5

BibDesk is an open source project that aims at developing an intuitive and user-friendly environment for managing and editing bibliography databases. The best part is that it can work well with different LaTeX editors, so you can use it to effortlessly streamline your workflow.

Within the main window you can create your own bibliography database by adding records manually, or by importing text, BibTeX, or RIF files.

BibDesk also includes a built-in web browser that enables you to access various catalogues of publications, and import the data with simple drag and drop actions.

Among other websites, you can use BibDesk to search for relevant articles on Google Scholar, ACM, CiteULike, HubMed, arXiv, JSTOR, SpringerLing, Project Euclid, and so on. For each publication, the app is able to store details about the article type, author, title, publishing year and date, and much more.

For your convenience, BibDesk includes a simple search bar, but also enables you to filter the results: you can limit the search to the entry title, person, skim notes, or file content fields. Of course, you also have the option to perform the query for the entire database.

Note that all the bibliographic information stored in the database can be quickly exported to various file formats, such as BibTeX, RIS, XML, PDF, HTML, RTF and so on.

As an added advantage, you can also copy the details to your clipboard and integrate them into your documents with minimal effort.

BibDesk is a great tool to have around if you want to keep track of the bibliographic information for all the materials you are using in your research. The best part is that you can also associate files or even web links. This is extremely useful when you have to integrate bibliography details in your LaTeX documents.
