When iOS 8 has been released, Apple replaced the iPhone Configuration Utility with Apple Configurator, which can be used to quickly configure multiple iOS devices at the same time.

Among other things, and similar to its predecessor, Apple Configurator also provides support for viewing the console log for any connected iOS device. However, to run the application you need access to a Mac running on OS X 10.11 Yosemite.

iOS Console is a minimalist OS X application that comes to rescue users that have stuck with Mavericks, but the utility can also run on OS X Yosemite.

Note that on first launch iOS Console offers to move itself to the Application directory in the home folder and not in the user Applications folder, like most apps.

You need to connect the iOS device you want to monitor to your Mac via USB and create a backup by using the iTunes application. Once a connection is established, you will be able to view the iOS console log in the app’s main window.

Finding your way around the iOS Console application proves to be quite intuitive: you can easily clean or reload the console log, or input date and time markers to make the information easier to read.

IOS Console includes a search tool that enables you to find specific parameters in the log a lot faster. What’s more, the application offers you the possibility to export the recorded data to a .log file, which can then be analyzed using more advanced tools.

To conclude, iOS Console is a great alternative if you want to visualize the console logs generated by your iOS device without having to switch to Yosemite.

At the same time, the app focuses only on this task, so you will not have to deal with the more advanced functions provided by Apple Configurator.
