The Activity Monitor bundled with each macOS installation provides you with a considerable amount of information about the running processes on your Mac, but some may be looking for an app that can take things even further and help you keep a closer eye on all active tasks.

TaskExplorer is just such a tool, designed to help you visually explore running processes and track signing status, VirusTotal scan reports, loaded dynamic libraries, open files and network connections.

TaskExplorer can provide you with very useful information about each process. For example, you can quickly view which tasks are signed by Apple or third parties, as well as those that are unsigned.

You can see each task’s loaded dylibs, all the files they have opened and the network connections they have created.

A very useful feature included in TaskExplorer is the ability to access VirusTotal scan reports for each process, which can alert you about malware or other potentially unwanted items.

The application’s interface is relatively straightforward and split into two main panels: one lists all active processes while the second can display dylibs, open files or network connections.

However, it is not possible to resize these panels or the main application window, which makes it difficult to monitor processes while performing other activities.

You can switch between the ‘Flat View’ mode, in which task are sorted by name, and the hierarchical ‘Tree View' mode.

While the app does offer simple and special filters for tasks, dylibs, files and network connections, it would help if you could also separate system and user processes, as well as active and inactive ones.

Overall, TaskExplorer is a suitable utility for those wishing to have access to more information related to the running processes on their Macs. It packs a lot of useful features, but could do with some interface improvements and additional filters.
