macOS Sonoma is the latest installment of Apple’s desktop OS, and while it doesn’t change too much, it does introduce a few cool features and small enhancements.

If you have an Apple TV, or you use an app like Aerial, you may already be familiar with these. They are high-definition, slow-motion videos that capture landscapes, cityscapes, underwater environments, outer space, and a lot more.

These screensavers are perfectly integrated with the new Lock Screen, where they will keep playing while your Mac is locked. When unlocked, the video will be paused on your desktop, as a wallpaper, and the video will resume later.

This is a feature third-party developers have tried to integrate before, and Apple has finally taken a crack at it. These widgets make it easier to access various app or system features and provide useful information.

There are quite a few widgets to choose from, with more to come, and placing them on your desktop couldn’t be simpler. You don’t get the level of customization you see in third-party software, however, and they can’t be easily toggled on or off.

Safari now offers the option to create multiple profiles for different topics or workflows. These allow you to separate your bookmarks, history, cookies, extensions, and favorites based on what you need at any given time.

Screen sharing becomes easier via a universal screen sharing picker, and you will be able to place yourself on top of shared content with the help of the new Presenter Overlay.

From enhanced privacy protection and new features in Messages to Notes PDF support and Game Mode, Apple has managed to bring a decent number of additions to the table, though the overall experience won’t be changed too much.

macOS Sonoma will primarily shine through its visual upgrades, via the new screensavers and widgets, the latter of which also provide a significant boost to functionality. Screen sharing, communication, and office work get easier as well, with a host of other smaller improvements to complete the package.
