NetRestore is a free Mac OS X desktop application designed to provide a reliable front-end to the Apple Software Restore command line tool located at /usr/sbin/asr.

Apple Software Restore (asr) enables you to restore or clone a disk image to your hard drive. NetRestore can be used to restore a master disk image that is hosted locally, on the Internet (via HTTP) or on a network (via AFP).

NetRestore is able to restore a disk image to a HDD using file-level or block-level copying. Moreover, you can use customization tools to configure specific information about your computer (name, network settings, firmware passwords and more).

With NetRestore, you also get a powerful database administration utility for managing machine-specific data. What's more, the management tool is also integrated with the Postgres database of Apple Remote Desktop.

System requirements

  • ARD 3.0 or higher required for ARD integration
  • Intel-based Mac + Windows XP required for dual-boot deployment.

What's new in NetRestore 3.4.6:

  • Updated the method for applying changes to the target volume's network configuration. Included a newer version of ncutil as well.
  • Resolved some issues handling errors during NTFS restores.
  • The NetInstall-Restore disk image can now be mounted and restored to a local volume, allowing you to boot from a local volume and get similar behavior to a NetBooted client. This is a good option for deployments in which a "hidden" partition is leveraged for restoring the production partition.
  • NRH no longer requires 2X space on the target volume to store the master disk image. If 2X may be required, NRH warns you accordingly if 2X space is not available.
