With a straightforward philosophy and a self-explanatory name, Memory Boost is a small OS X utility that is fully capable of taking on the responsibility of optimizing your Mac’s RAM memory usage.

If you are a hardcore Apple tech fan, then you probably know that the release of OS X 10.9 Mavericks has brought along a new technology called Compressed Memory that basically makes sure that enough free memory is always available when you need it most.

In plain words, when your Mac is close to its memory limit, the Compressed Memory feature automatically compresses data from inactive apps, thus, instantly making it usable again.

If you are actually wondering why would you need a memory optimization application such as Memory Boost installed on your Mac, the answer is quite convincing: instead of letting OS X take care of the memory compression, you can do it manually whenever you want, with a single click.

This said, you will barely notice the software running, as once installed on your Mac,  Memory Boost’s only activity sign will be its free memory counter found on the status bar menu.

Once you click Memory Boost’s menubar counter, you will be greeted by a floating window with a minimalist interface that displays the amount of free memory, the total memory value, and a visual representation of the amount of free and used memory.

Working with Memory Boost will almost always mean that you will have to click its status bar counter-like item, and also to simply click the “Optimize” button.

Yes, an auto-optimization feature would have been useful, and, yes, it would be nice to be able to see the actual amount of compressed and wired memory, as well as a hint about the apps that currently use the most memory.

But, the truth of the matter is that these are features that you can live without, and the most important thing is Memory Boost being an easy to use app that works well.
