GhostReader For Mac

macOS comes with a collection of voices that can be employed to have any text string spoken at you by simply pressing a hotkey (navigate to the System Preferences “Dictation & Speech” panel to switch between available voices and to adjust the speaking rate).

GhostReader is a Mac app that tries to push things further by allowing you to handle large documents and generate audio tracks. Moreover, it provides support for working with Infovox iVox voices, which come in an assortment of languages.

To start working with the GhostReader app, you must begin by providing the text you want to hear: the utility is able to open text, Word, PDF, RTF, and HTML files, but also includes an Edit mode that allows you to manually type content.

GhostReader also integrates with the macOS Services. You can select the text you want to process in any text editor and send it to the GhostReader main window by selecting the appropriate entry in the contextual menu.

Right off the bat, GhostReader provides support only for a selection of system voices: via the Preferences window you can decide which one you want to use, and adjust the speaking rate.

However, GhostReader is also able to work with Infovox iVox, an application which provides natural sounding voices for different languages. Note that the Infovox iVox application must be installed separately, and that you must download and install each voice you want to employ.

GhostReader proposes a simple solution for quickly generating audio track starting from any text file: you can choose the voice you want to use, the speech rate, and the volume. The end result can be saved as a GhostReader project (remains editable) or exported as a track to iTunes.
