Disk space is a finite resource, so to make the most of it, you must ensure that you are not storing files, especially large ones, unnecessarily. Disk Map is a fast macOS app that can scan any folder and quickly generate a navigable tree-map chart.
To start working with the Disk Map app you must either use the Finder menu to direct the app to a specific folder or simply drag and drop the directory on top of the app’s main window.
Disk Map allows you to initiate the scan and, once the process is over, it will display the number of analyzed files, and their total size. The app is able to scan content stored both on internal and external drives.
To eliminate irrelevant data, Disk Map allows you to visualize only files that are over a certain size. The user can adjust the minimum file size via the app’s Preferences (the default exclusion rule is set at 50Kb).
Based on the available data, Disk Map generates a tree-map display that can help you see the largest sub-folders and the contained files. When dealing with a large number of fairly small files, Disk Map will group them together.
Disk Map enables you to see the full path to a specific file, and you can choose to view them in the Finder or to use the QuickLook capabilities to preview its content. To help you gain more space, Disk Map can either delete or compress files.
Within the Disk Map tree-map view, you get to detect the files that take up the most space and act in consequence: delete them if you don’t need them anymore, add them to the ignore list if you want to keep them, or compress them to gain more space.
To make your job easier, Disk Map can ignore very small files, or toggle the visibility of hidden or system files. Moreover, Disk Map can keep the files that are to be deleted in a queue to make sure you don’t erase them by mistake.
