AppleJack is an AppleScript designed to assist you in cleaning up your system in order to resolve startup problems. The script can help you repair disks and permissions, clean cache files or the virtual memory, and validate preference files.
The AppleJack archive comes with an installer package that automatically deploys the script to the appropriate location together with all necessary resources files. All you have to do is follow the on-screen instructions.
Within the included documentation file you get to learn more about the script’s functionality and get details about the installation location. To interact with the script, you need to go through the command line on system startup.
Worth mentioning is that AppleJack has to be run only in single user mode otherwise it can make the operating system crash. As a result, the AppleJack script is great if you are experiencing startup problems because you can rely on its functionalities to deal with the issues.
However, to uninstall the AppleJack script you need to run the following command in the Terminal: "sudo /private/var/root/Library/Scripts/applejack.sh uninstall"
To start using the AppleJack script you need to restart your Mac and hold down the Command and S keys at the same time to enter the single user mode. Within the command line, you will get instructions on how to launch the script and view all the available options.
For your convenience, AppleJack sports an autopilot that will perform all the tasks sequentially, but you can also opt for the interactive mode where you get to manually select the cleanup or repair process you want to run.
AppleJack is a great resource to have around in case you need to bring back a system that seems to be dead: you get to repair disks or permissions or perform cleanup tasks.
The AppleJack script can be accessed via the command line, on startup, as soon as you enter the single user mode.
