Undercover is a advanced and non-intrusive Mac OS X application that enables you to track down and locate your stolen computer.
Thanks to Undercover, you can receive detailed information about the location of your Mac, data which also included coordinates from the wireless location tracking along with the internal and external IP addresses.
The data provided by the app, along with the information that you could obtain from the Internet Service Provider, could help the police locate and find your stolen Mac.
On top of that, Undercover uses your Mac’s built-in or external webcam to take pictures of the thief and the surrounding environment, once every eight minutes.
At the same time, Undercover allows you to take photos and screenshots at your own will, and even allows you to approximate the location of your device on the map based on the available information. The Location feature also comes with a timeline that makes it easy to view where your computer has been in the past.
Moreover, Undercover is capable to constantly monitor your Mac’s keystrokes and keep records of the typed information. Every text snippet the thief has entered on your stolen Mac can be tracked and revealed. It is worth mentioning that accounts and passwords are note stored or revealed by Undercover.
With Undercover’s help, you can track multiple computers, check their serial number and the version of Undercover installed on them. You also have the option to rename, transfer or delete a device from your personal list.
If everything else fails, you can try Plan B, a feature that enables you to simulate hardware failure or show full-screen messages to your thief. The full-screen message also block the access to your Mac until the function is disabled.
Unfortunately, Undercover does not run as advertised and might prove to be useless if your Mac gets stolen. First of all, Undercover is not able to take screenshots and snapshots of your thief at all times even if the Mac is constantly connected to the Internet.
The snapshot feature seems to work only when the installer is requesting a system restart, after which none of the above presented features work. Plan B failed to lock or simulate a system failure even after restarting the computer a couple of times.
What is more, Undercover does not provide an uninstaller and you have to manually remove all its files from your Mac if you want to get rid of the app.
