A lightweight and very easy-to-use application that enables you to securely store your sensitive data on an encrypted virtual disk drive. #Encrypt data #Secure file #File encrypter #Encrypter #Secure #Encrypt
Safe is a reliable and trustworthy Mac OS X app that helps you encrypt your files and keep them away from prying eyes.
Thanks to Safe’s encryption capabilities, you can make your sensitive data unreadable to anyone who tries to access it without your password. All you have to do is to create an encrypted virtual disk drive, transfer your files and folders and let Safe do the hard work.
The great thing about Safe is that you can use the created virtual drive just like you would use a standard disk drive.
Hence, you can use any app and save any type of file in your encrypted vault. If you mount the volume using Safe you can view your files as unencrypted items, but if you try to access them without mounting the virtual drive, you will only see a series of encrypted and indistinguishable files.
What is more, Safe allows you to store encrypted files on standard hard disks, external or network drives, flash drives, NAS and even on your Dropbox folder.
It is worth mentioning that Safe is derived from EncFS, a user-space encrypted file system based on FUSE. Consequently, Safe is fully compatible with existing EncFS containers although it does not use FUSE to integrate with your operating system.
On the other hand, Safe hosts a localhost WebDAV server and takes advantage of OS X’s existing WebDAV functionality to offer a native interface. Unfortunately, Safe does not handle well large files and, if you intend to encrypt large files you should forget about multitasking.
Any file larger than a few megabytes could freeze you Finder and render your Mac unusable until the encryption process is complete. This drawback is caused by Safe’s encryption method that encrypts each file individually rather than the entire drive. On the positive side, this procedure ensures a more safer storage environment for your data.
