QtPass offers you the possibility to use the standard Unix password manager on your Mac. The utility requires GPG to be installed beforehand and employs the GPG cryptographic software and Git or pass to encrypt and protect your data.
Upon launch, the QtPass application checks if you have the GPG software installed on your Mac and provides download instructions if not. The software can be downloaded directly, or you can use various package installers.
Worth mentioning is that the GPG Suite comes with install and uninstall apps that make both procedures remarkably straightforward. The next step is to create a GPG key that you can then use to encrypt the QtPass database.
Even though the process might seem challenging to inexperienced users, finding your way around is fairly intuitive.
Within the QtPass Configuration panel you can decide if you want to use GPG or pass to encrypt your data, and optimize the app’s behavior to match you own needs. QtPass allows you to specify which characters should be used for the password, can automatically clear the clipboard, can hide the passwords, and so on.
Once you have dealt with these issues, just start adding or generating passwords via the app’s main window, while adding any related observations in the text box associated with each entry.
Note that QtPass allows you to specify which GPG users have the permission to decrypt the entries in a particular folder. Moreover, QtPass is able to work with multiple profiles.
QtPass functions like any other password manager: you can easily input passkeys and the associated information, you can edit previous entries, generate new passwords, copy the keys to the clipboard to reduce the time spent connecting to various services, and so on.
QtPass can protect your information by using either the GPG cryptographic software or pass, the standard Unix password manager that relies on GPG.
To retrieve any of the available entries, QtPass will require the GPG passkey of any of the users that have access to the database.
