OS X Bash Update is a free and simple to use Bash patch tool provided by Apple in order to easily and rapidly fix a number of vulnerabilities in the Bash Unix shell on its OS X Lion, OS X Lion Server, OS X Mountain Lion, and OS X Mavericks operating systems.
Dubbed as the Shellshock vulnerability, this security bug would have allowed on unpatched versions of OS X to execute shell commands by taking advantage of the fact that extra headers could have been passed through as commands via the pre-installed Bash shell.
Although it sounds quite complex, patching your Bash using the OS X Bash Update is not such a complicated task mainly because Apple provides this patch as a PKG installer which will allow you to fix the Shellshock bug on your system with just a couple of mouse clicks.
Thus, the only thing you are required to do are to launch the BashUpdate installer and go through the steps that you will be guided through by the OS X Bash Update tool. Once you’ve passed the Software License Agreement screen, all that remains to do is to click the “Install” button and the utility will do all the work for you by installing the patched version of Bash over the old and vulnerable one.
To be more exact, the OS X Bash Update utility makes sure that the Bash Unix shell on your system will be upgraded from the current version, susceptible to be exploited using the CVE-2014-6271 and CVE-2014-7169 security bugs, to the 3.2.53(1) version, a patched variant, no longer exploitable using hacking tools designed to take advantage of those too vulnerabilities.
Once you’ve installed the OS X Bash Update, you can check to see if everything was installed into place by opening a Terminal window and executing the “bash --version” command. If the version displayed for Bash is 3.2.53(1)-release, than everything has worked perfectly and you, once again, have a secure and protected operating system.
If you want to make sure that your data is safe and no malicious parties can access it without your consent, you should install the OS X Bash Update provided by Apple as fast as possible.
