Most Mac computers come with built-in webcams and microphones, which makes them extremely user-friendly, but can also be a serious threat to your privacy if subjected to unauthorized access.

Micro Snitch, formerly known as NOYB, which was short for None Of Your Business, is an unobtrusive Mac OS X app that lets you know if your webcam or microphone is active.

The Micro Snitch app resides in your status bar and allows you to instantly see if any of the audio or video input devices connected to your Mac are active by displaying notification messages.

The app is able to identify and provide details both about the device active and the service that is controlling it.

The best part is that the app’s status bar icon will also change accordingly, which means that you will be informed about the device’s status at all times, no matter if you miss the notification or not.

Within the app’s main menu you can see a list of all detected audio or video devices: the inactive ones are separated from the currently active ones.

Since Micro Snitch uses very few resources, you can keep it running at all time. The utility can log camera and microphone activation or deactivation events, and you get access to the log file via the app's Preferences window.

If Micro Snitch considers that a certain input device cannot be monitored in a reliable manner, the application will display warning when you connect them to your Mac.

However, keep in mind that Micro Snitch will only monitor the microphone and camera activity: you do not have the option to deactivate them within the application.
