Kasper is an open-source utility designed to help you recover password-protected Stuffit archives.

Stuffit archives were the standard way to compress files under the classic Mac OS and Stuffit Expander was bundled with Macs until Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

Stuffit X archives (denoted with .sitx) use greater compression and encryption than .sit and is the current Stuffit standard. Password protected encrypted archives were a feature added around Stuffit 4.5.

Because of the lack of popularity and need, password recovery programs were never created for Stuffit (or they never got around much).

Old password crackers and removers never worked properly on Stuffit archives created with the utility after it's initial releases.

In this light, Kasper was a necessary tool to be created.

What's new in Kasper 1.5:

  • Replaced engine with TheUnarchiver's unary tool. This no longer requires the unstuff CLI tool be installed in the /usr/bin folder. Also, the unstuff tool require the full Stuffit Deluxe software installed.
