A simple utility that brings high strength data encryption to Mac OS X users, enabling them to encrypt files or folders with a simple drag and drop. #Encrypt data #Data encryption #Decrypt data #Encrypt #Decrypt #Checksum
FileWard DES is a file encryption / decryption application and password generator for the Mac OS X platform. It comes with a strong encryption algorithm and makes use of the OpenSSL cryptography libraries to provide unbreakable security to your files.
The application features a minimalistic drag-and-drop user interface to which you can drop the files you want to encrypt. Other options to open files with FileWard DES is to drop them onto the Dock icon, use the File menu option or the standard CMD + O hotkey.
Once a file is opened with FileWard DES, you will be prompted to type the password to protect it with. If in doubt, you can use the Password Assistant, which is basically a password generator that offers you several types of passwords to choose from, an option to set the length and a quality indicator.
As soon as the 2 passwords match and you hit enter, .ld0 encrypted files will be created in the same location as the original. Keep in mind that FileWard DES does not support batch-encryption. Although you can drag multiple files onto the app, you will need to manually specify a password for each file.
The application comes with other extra options in its File menu, such as encrypting entire folders, encrypting files and sending the text information to the clipboard, creating file or folder checksums, verifying FileWard checksums, securely deleting files and displaying an OpenSSL Info window.
To sum things up, FileWard DES is an incredibly simple to use file / folder encryption tool that uses the robust cryptographic characteristics of OpenSSL. Users need to note that encrypted files can only be opened by specifying the password, so it is mandatory to remember it.
