While macOS comes with a lot of built-in tools, and desktop widgets now that Sonoma has been released, there is no way to view album art on your desktop or while your Mac is idle.

ScreenSleeves aims to add that functionality. It works with Music, Spotify, and many other streaming services and players, allowing you to view the current track’s information and album art on your idle screen or in a small window on the desktop.

This is what the app was really made for, which makes sense since it was originally a screensaver. While your PC is idle and music is playing, it can activate a screensaver-like view that shows the current track’s album art and other information.

The full-screen display can be activated manually, but it’s probably best to set it on a timer — when you haven’t used your Mac for a specified amount of time, the screensaver will be activated automatically, and then turned off when user input is detected.

It seems pretty clear that the optional floating window album art display mode isn’t the app’s intended functionality. It takes up more screen space than necessary, no matter how you resize it, and it just feels unpolished.

If you’re looking for a way to display album art on your screen while using your Mac, I would recommend other apps, such as Silicio, which is also free.

It’s nice to see that you can tweak the app’s behavior and appearance quite extensively. Anything from the size of visual elements and optional information to preferred players and full-screen activation can be modified to suit your needs.

On the whole, ScreenSleeves is great if you want to see album art and track information on your screen while the Mac isn’t being used, such as during parties or other events. For displaying track info on your desktop, it isn’t quite as good.

What's new in ScreenSleeves 6.10.6:

  • Adds control to Preferences "No fade" which suppresses the fade transition between repositions or when track changes. This is 'per theme', If you switch between themes, you may have to set it for each theme you use.
