Searching for Wi-Fi networks in your area is sometimes helpful if you want to know which network sends the strongest signal, thus deciding which one to connect to. In order to do so, you need a 3rd party app, because OS X can show you only a rudimentary rating of detected networks.
WiFi Radar is a straightforward Mac OS X software solution that can scan and detect all available wireless networks in your proximity. It offers many extra details about WiFi networks than OS X does. For instance, you can view a network’s BSSID (MAC address), channel, RSSI / signal, encryption type (open / password-protected), last seen time and signal sample graph.
The application supports all Airport cards integrated with your MacBook or iMac. Also, scanning for networks is extremely easy, as it involves clicking on a Start button. To stop scanning, simply click on the red Stop button. What’s more, the aforementioned graph displays the evolution of a network’s signal over time.
WiFi Radar features a highly intuitive user interface split into an upper toolbar (with buttons to start / stop scanning), the main network area that lists all the basic details of detect networks and the advanced panel, where you can view the signal graph and other details.
The main window is very easy to work with, but there is not much to interact with, anyway. WiFi Radar is just an information browser. In spite of this, you can rearrange the columns of each network detail to the left or right, or sort networks based on a detail by clicking on its corresponding name.
To wrap this up, the application is not the most advanced Wi-Fi detection utility for OS X on the market, but it manages to store the most important information you need to learn which networks are best to connect to. WiFi Radar is also a great tool for advanced users who need help troubleshooting wireless networks.
