Measure maximum network bandwidth capabilities with this easy-to-use app that provides a GUI for Iperf, a powerful command-line utility. #Iperf frontend #Network performance #Monitor network #Iperf #Network #Performance
Iperf is a command-line tool designed to perform active network measurements in order to determine the maximum possible bandwidth. Unfortunately, while it certainly packs a lot of features, the lack of a graphical user interface reduces is accessibility.
There is an alternative, however, as JPerf is a more intuitive Java-based tool that acts as a frontend for Iperf and can help you calculate the maximum TCP and UDP without having to use the command console.
Naturally, you first need to install Iperf to perform any type of measurements, but you can avoid the more complex aspects involved in using the original utility. However, JPerf still needs to be launched from the Terminal app, although things get a lot simpler once it is up and running.
There is no need to be familiar with the many Iperf commands, as they are generated automatically as you select various functions and change certain settings.
Unless the app is running in server mode, you need to provide a host address that the client can connect to, along with the appropriate port number.
There are a large number of additional parameters that can be customized, such as the type of protocol to be used, buffer length, window size and maximum segment size for TCP, as well as buffer and packet size for UDP.
Once the configurations have been completed, you can run Iperf and analyze the generated graph, keep an eye on the activity log and even save your current configuration for later use.
For the most part, JPerf is a great deal more user-friendly than the original Iperf, although its interface is not what you would call modern. Nevertheless, it makes it much easier to perform bandwidth measurements, so it is a good alternative if you are not comfortable with using the command console.
What's new in JPerf 2.0.2:
- import/export feature implemented ( issue #4 )
