Stellarium is a free and open source 3D planetarium specially designed to render a realistic looking sky along with the astronomical objects that you could see with the naked eye, telescope or binoculars.

Stellarium comes with a minimalist interface that enables you to enjoy the view, navigate the sky, travel trough time, change the view and location. The fullscreen mode allows you to take advantage of your Mac’s entire screen and focus on the star gazing and hide the control toolbar.

The great thing about Stellarium is that you can use it as a learning or teaching tool that is not hindered by the various technical issues such as clouds, light pollution or weather. Hence, you can view the sky map with the starts, planets and nebula along with their labels, names, satellites, constellations and associated art.

What is more, Stellarium offers you the option to view the sky from different location on the Earth as well as extraterrestrial locations such as the Moon, Jupiter, Mars, Europa, Uranus and other known planets.

Another great feature is the Time Traveling tool that you can use to jump to different points in time. You can fast forward and track the movement of different celestial objects. This feature can be easily access from the auto hiding toolbar located in the bottom left corner of the window.

Stellarium provides basic navigation tools, drag and drop support, zooming tools and customizable keyboard shortcuts. The discreet HUD constantly allows you to check your current location, Field of View, graphic performance and time details.

Moreover, the plugin system allows you to add artificial satellites, new telescope configuration, ocular simulation and more. On top of that, you can add new solar system objects from different online sources and insert your own deep sky objects, constellation images, landscapes, scripts and other elements.
