While modern cars tend to have onboard computers that calculate mileage and can predict the cost of a trip, they are notoriously difficult to operate, and not every car has them. Plus, if you don’t want to get in your car just to plan a journey, a Mac app could be useful.

Trip is an aptly-named application that helps you perform any type of calculation related to your car’s fuel consumption and upcoming journeys. It’s primarily aimed at US and UK drivers, or those in other countries that use imperial units.

If you know the cost of fuel, your car’s MPG, and the distance you need to travel, the app can calculate how much the journey would cost, and how much fuel you would need to buy.

You also have separate calculators for determining just how much fuel you will need for a certain trip, how much fuel you would be able to buy for a certain amount of money, and how far you could travel with it.

If you’ve kept track of how much you’ve spent of fuel to cover an exact distance, you can also quickly calculate your car’s MPG.

You can choose between Imperial and US gallons for calculations, and a separate tool is available for converting between MPG and liters per 100 KM, MPG to Miles per Liter, along with a few other units.

However, there is no option to perform any of the main calculations in units more frequently used in countries where metric is standard. Namely, L/100 KM instead of MPG, and Kilometers instead of Miles.

Also, the fact that cents or pence need to be used for the cost of fuel, instead of the main unit (dollar, pound), makes it difficult to use the app in countries where the price isn’t listed in these subunits.

Overall, Trip has the potential to be useful, but the calculations it performs aren’t particularly complex, and you will normally find other apps and websites that let you do it for free. To top it off, it is only usable in countries that employ imperial measurements.
