BOINC, short for Berkeley Open Infrastructure of Network Computing, is a free and open source middleware system for volunteer and grid computing.
Although it was mainly developed to support the SETI@home project, BOINC proved its utility for various distributed applications in different fields such as medicine, mathematics, climatology, molecular biology and astrophysics.
Thanks to BOINC, researchers from different science projects can access a large amount of processing power from personal computers from all over the world. What is more, the framework is cross platform can can be used on the Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and Android.
To start using BOINC, you just have to choose the projects that you want to help, type in an email address and password and let BOINC do the hard work while your Mac is idle.
BOINC can be used by numerous volunteer computing projects, part of them are based at universities and research labs and others are run by individuals or companies. You have the option to participate in as many projects as you want with just a few mouse clicks.
From BOINC’s main window you can add, remove, suspend or resume projects and check the short description of the currently selected research.
If you want to access more information about how your resources are used, you can switch to the Advanced View and check the latest notices, keep track of all active projects, monitor tasks and transfers, view user statistics and disk usage.
The Projects tab helps you update, suspend, remove or reset a project, visit its home page and check your account. You can view all active tasks, check the graphics and abort a task by accessing the Tasks tab.
BOINC also comes with an overview screensaver that will display general information such as the BINIC status along with the list of projects while your Mac’s screen is idle.
