The ownCloud data sync system offers you the possibility to transfer files between multiple devices by using your own server, or by employing third party hosting. The ownCloud application represents the client side of this system.

To be able to use the ownCloud application, you must first have access to an ownCloud server, regardless if it is hosted on your own computers or on a shared host. Note that the ownCloud server version can be deployed currently only on Windows or Linux operating systems.

Once the server connection is established, the ownCloud desktop application will start transferring data between devices, without requiring any user interaction. Of course, you will have to specify the folders you want to sync first.

By default, the utility resides in your status bar, and provides a small menu that enables you to access the Settings window, or launch the ownCloud webpage in the web browser.

Besides the desktop synchronization client, ownCloud also provides mobile applications for iOS and Android devices. As a result, you will be able to work on your projects even if you are on the go, and then have the latest version of the documents on all other devices.

To make sure the ownCloud background activity will not interfere with your work too much, via the ownCloud Settings panel you can easily setup download and upload bandwidth limits. The same area enables you to setup proxies if necessary.

Since you can transform your own computers into servers for the ownCloud synchronization service, this system represents a viable solution if you do not want to share your data with third party services, but can also work with shared hosting.
