BitTorrent is a widely used protocol for transferring large files over the Internet that is based on the idea that while downloading data, you also upload it to other users who transfer data via a BitTorrent client.
Tomato Torrent is an open-source BitTorrent client that enables you to download multiple torrents very easily from a minimalistic user interface. There are three ways of downloading torrents with the Tomato client: you can either double-click on the .torrent file, drag and drop the file onto Tomato's icon, or download from a URL.
From the Downloading Torrent window, you can monitor the time left, the download percentage, the transfer speed as well as the upload speed. You can view various stats and the error logs, and to set a maximum upload rate.
The client also enables you to stop / resume the downloads by using the "Stop Torrent" option from the File menu or by closing the download window. To resume the download, click on it from the Recent popup menu from the Starting Point window.
You can also get information about a torrent by just opening the torrent file with Tomato and click on the "Torrent Details" button in the setup window.
Another nice feature for end-users is the ability to create your own torrents. In order to do so, you need to have a tracker server for your torrents and create a BitTorrent Meta-Info file. The tracker needs to be running all the time since BitTorrent uses them to get information abut other clients when downloading the torrent.
The torrent generation window helps you choose items to create torrents for, add the tracker URL, and select a folder where your Meta-Info files are placed in.
As for the looks, Tomato Torrent features an intuitive and native Mac OS X interface that allows you to download and create torrents in no time.
To sum up, the application is not recommended if you are using Mac OS X 10.7 and up, but it's still a good choice if you are running older versions of Apple's desktop operating system.
