Working with PostgreSQL database servers can prove challenging if you are not accustomed to the command line. PostgresPrefs is a System Preferences pane that helps you control the servers in a more intuitive manner.
Like any other System Preferences pane, PostgresPrefs integrates an installation mechanism and allows you to decide if you want to deploy the pane for the current user or for all system accounts.
Naturally, you need to navigate to the System Preferences window to access the PostgresPrefs interface. Note that the app will automatically detect all PostgreSQL servers installed on your system.
In fact, PostgresPrefs is compatible with all PostgreSQL servers deployed on your computer, regardless of the installation tools you have employed (such as one click or Homebrew installers).
Within the PostgresPrefs main window, you get to see the list of available servers, together with details about their current status. The utility employs color tags to help you detect possible issues faster, and allows you to start or stop the server with the press of a button.
Within the PostgresPrefs server settings panel, you get to change the database username, the port, or the locations for the Bin, Data, and Log files. You get to decide if the PostgreSQL servers should be started manually or automatically at boot or login.
For your convenience, PostgresPrefs integrates a shortcut to access the server’s log via the default OS X Console application.
Bottom line, PostgresPrefs enables you to interact with PostgreSQL installations and launch or stop database servers via the System Preferences, without having to employ Terminal commands.
PostgresPrefs quickly detects PostgreSQL servers running on your system, allows you to change the output locations for the Bin, Data, and Log folders, deliver’s quick access to the log file, and can launch the servers automatically on boot or login.
