Keeping track of multiple email accounts usually means that you have to rely on a desktop client that also provides support for reviewing the entire message content, replying, organizing messages into folders and so on.

Howard is a small alternative solution that merely lets you know whenever you have received a new message on one of your accounts. The app also allows you to open the respective email services in your default web browser and can launch the Mail or Outlook applications.

Right off the bat, Howard prompts you to connect to your Microsoft email account, but via the app’s preferences, you can also configure the app to scan Gmail or Yahoo accounts.

Keep in mind that the Outlook, Gmail, and Yahoo accounts that are to be monitored by Howard can be changed in no time: the app will launch an authorization window for each service, and you need to provide the correct credentials.

Howard can also be configured to monitor IMAP accounts and comes with predefined server configurations to make the setup process easier: it includes the default IMAP server addresses for Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo, and GMX, together with the respective port numbers.

Within the Howard status bar menulet, you get to see the number of unread messages associated with a particular service. Note that the app employs a single line for all configured emails so that you can open all of them in your default browser with a mouse click.

Even though Howard can open the Mail and Outlook applications, it will not display a counter with the unread messages for the respective utilities.

For your convenience, Howard can be configured to open automatically at login, and you can adjust both the refresh interval (can go from 30 seconds to 120 minutes) and the audio alert that you want to hear when receiving a new email.

Bottom line, Howard is a simple yet efficient alternative for quickly accessing various email services whenever you get a new message without having to configure the accounts in a full-featured desktop client.
